I never intended to write a book about Ali. I didn’t want to reinhabit that world. But I saw that the books that were coming down the pike were mainly hagiographic, saint-making books. They really weren’t looking. They didn’t present the Ali that I had seen for almost a dozen years, through travelling with him extensively across the world, getting to know him as well as anybody could. In those days, you could hang around a lot. It wasn’t the period of the mass press conference, with kind questions and kind answers, so there was a lot of down time to sit around and talk to Ali, at least as much as you could possibly talk to Ali. You never interviewed Ali. One smart journalist referred to him as the world’s worst interview. You never really had a conversation with him. There was no give and take, especially if you pulled out a pencil and a notebook. He was always interested in putting forth the Muslim tract and he would improvise a whole lot into it. So I thought that it was time to write a book that would elevate him above a human cliché and put some flesh and blood on him.
